Rwa Bhineda Satu (excerpt)

This piece, one of several movements from the multimedia work Makrokosma Bali (2011), is focused on the many dualities of Balinese music. (Rwa Bhineda is the Balinese term for dualism, in the yin-yang sense of complementary opposites.) The work was premiered by the 25-member gamelan ensemble Seka Gong Taruna Mekar from the village of Tunjuk, Bali, under the direction of I Made Arnawa. The premiere of Makrokosma Bali took place at the Asian Art Museum in May 2011, but we made this recording in the Pura Dalem temple of Tunjuk a few months prior.
